HOME – August, 2016
Our around the world bucket tour was hatched 5 years ago. We can’t remember the how or why of the decision, likely a simple realization that our biennial trips were never going get us to the places we wanted to go.
The first deliberate act was to decide what our first best choices were for destinations while reserving the option to deviate at will.
There has never been a single theme to our travels so we organized by country.
How to choose among 200+ options? We wanted to give each place more than the one or two weeks work allowed in the past, but we can’t afford to dedicate the months that most every country rightly deserves.
Some were easy, some places have always called to us – the exotic evocation of French Polynesia by a long ago Cinerama movie; haunting National Geographic photos of vine tangled temples at Angkor Wat.
So we voted – using a list of all the countries each of us scored them. After 33 years we had rubbed off on one another so many were obvious. But surprisingly there were many “orphans”, places one of us gave top billing that didn’t even rate with the other. So take the top scorers, add a couple orphans for each of us, make some adjustments for cost (sorry Papua New Guinea), season (December in Tibet?), and destinations of convenience (transit points) and arrive at the “whole enchilada” outlined below.
Time, money, evolving inclinations, and a certainly fortitude will determine how closely we hew to it. Stay tuned.
I am impressed by how organized and well-thought out your trip is . . . absolutely amazing . . you have fodder for a great book.
